Laptop Recycling

Old laptops accumulate faster than anyone plans for. A refresh cycle finishes, a cupboard fills up, and nobody wants to be the person who put a machine full of company data in a skip. At Vantage, we make laptop recycling straightforward, collecting end-of-life machines, destroying the data they hold and recycling the hardware through approved routes.

Laptop Recycling

Recycling laptops the right way

A laptop is three disposal problems in one casing. There's the data on the drive, the lithium battery that has to come out before processing, and the mix of metals, plastics and circuit boards that makes up the rest of it. Each needs handling differently.

We collect and recycle laptops for businesses, public sector organisations, schools, IT resellers and waste operators, covering refresh programmes, office moves, site closures, damaged and warranty stock, and one-off clearances.

Whether it's a dozen machines or several hundred, we'll help find the right route.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us how many machines you've got and where they are, and we'll arrange secure collection through approved channels. Devices can be scanned and recorded so you receive an itemised record of exactly what left your site.

Machines are then processed at our permitted facility. Data-bearing drives are destroyed, lithium batteries are removed and routed through specialist battery recycling, and the remaining metals, plastics and circuit boards are recovered wherever possible.

You'll receive certificates of destruction, full documentation and complete traceability throughout.

Compliance

Compliance, sorted

Laptops fall under the WEEE regulations as electrical equipment and under data protection obligations as data-bearing assets. Our team manages the collection, documentation and recycling process on your behalf, helping you meet both without chasing anyone for paperwork.

Why Choose Vantage?

Most IT recyclers subcontract the battery stage. We don't. As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator with our own permitted facility, we handle the lithium cells ourselves rather than passing them on, which keeps the chain of custody short and the audit trail clean.

Add our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 collection points, and you get one provider from collection through to final treatment.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do businesses recycle laptops?
End-of-life laptops should be collected by a licensed waste carrier and processed at a permitted facility, where data is destroyed, the lithium battery is removed for specialist recycling and the remaining materials are recovered. Documentation is provided to evidence both the data destruction and the recycling.
Is the data destroyed before laptops are recycled?
Yes. Data-bearing drives are processed so that data cannot be recovered, with certificates provided as evidence. Devices can also be scanned and recorded so you have an itemised report of exactly what was collected.
What happens to the laptop battery?
Lithium batteries are removed before the hardware is processed and routed through specialist battery recycling, where lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper can be recovered. We handle this stage ourselves as an Approved Battery Treatment Operator.
What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Can you collect damaged or broken laptops?
Yes. Damaged machines are collected and processed in the same way, with extra care where a battery is swollen or heat-affected. Let us know if any devices are damaged so we can arrange suitable containment.
Why should businesses recycle WEEE waste?
Businesses should recycle WEEE waste to comply with environmental regulations, reduce landfill waste and recover valuable materials such as metals, plastics and electronic components. Proper WEEE recycling also helps prevent potentially hazardous substances from entering the environment, supporting sustainability and corporate environmental goals.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
