Portable Battery Recycling

Portable batteries build up quietly. A drawer here, a collection box there, and before long there's a pile of mixed chemistries that nobody wants to touch. With around 40,000 tonnes of portable batteries placed on the UK market each year, ensuring they are collected and recycled responsibly is more important than ever. At Vantage, we make portable battery recycling simple, collecting, sorting and recycling batteries from offices, retail sites, collection points and manufacturing operations across the UK.

Portable Battery Recycling

Recycling every portable battery type

Portable batteries cover everything from AA and AAA cells to button cells, rechargeable packs and the batteries built into everyday products. Different chemistries need separating and treating in different ways, which is why mixed battery waste needs specialist handling rather than a general waste bin.

We recycle alkaline, lithium, lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries for retailers, manufacturers, distributors, local authorities, offices and waste operators. Whether you've got a few collection boxes to empty or ongoing volumes to manage, we'll help find the right route.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us roughly what you've got and we'll recommend the right containers and collection frequency. We can supply battery storage units and UN-approved containers where the chemistries involved call for them.

Once collected, batteries are transported through approved channels and sorted by chemistry at authorised recycling facilities, where materials such as zinc, steel, lithium, nickel and cadmium are recovered and returned to the supply chain.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance, sorted

Businesses that supply, handle or collect portable batteries have obligations under the batteries regulations, and lithium cells carry additional transport requirements on top of that. Our team manages the collection, paperwork and recycling process on your behalf, so battery waste is handled safely and in line with current requirements.

No confusing regulations. No chasing paperwork. No wondering where your waste ended up.

Why Choose Vantage?

We've spent more than 20 years dealing with specialist waste streams that many companies can't or won't handle. Mixed portable batteries are a good example, because the value is in correctly identifying and segregating chemistries rather than treating everything the same.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) with our own ADR fleet and permitted treatment facility, we can manage portable battery waste from collection through to final recycling.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a portable battery?
A portable battery is any battery that is sealed, weighs under 4kg, can be hand carried and isn't designed exclusively for industrial or professional use. This includes AA, AAA, C, D and 9V cells, button cells, and the rechargeable packs found in laptops, power tools, cameras and other consumer products.
What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Can you collect mixed battery waste?
Yes. We can collect mixed battery waste streams from businesses and help identify, segregate, process, recycle and dispose of different battery chemistries safely and efficiently. This includes lithium, lithium-ion, lead-acid, nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium and alkaline batteries.
Why can't portable batteries go in general waste?
Batteries contain metals and chemicals that shouldn't enter landfill, and lithium cells in particular pose a serious fire risk if they're crushed or damaged in a waste vehicle or transfer station. Separate collection protects people, property and the environment, and allows materials to be recovered.
How should batteries be stored before collection?
Store batteries in a dry, cool place away from combustible materials, clearly label them, and tape or cap the terminals of lithium and 9V cells to prevent short circuits. Damaged or swollen batteries should be isolated and reported to us so we can arrange suitable containment.
Do you provide battery collection containers?
Yes. We supply battery storage units, drums and UN-approved containers depending on the chemistries and volumes involved, and our team will recommend the most suitable option for your sites.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own ADR fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
