Handling airbags safely

Airbag modules contain an inflator charged with an energetic material, and that charge remains live whether the module is brand new, time-expired or removed from a scrapped vehicle. Deployed units are a different proposition, but undeployed modules need specialist containers, correct segregation and ADR transport.

We collect airbags from vehicle manufacturers, dealerships, garages, distributors, vehicle dismantlers and logistics providers. That covers end-of-life modules, warranty and returned stock, damaged units and recall programmes.

How it works

Tell us what modules you've got and roughly what volumes. We'll supply specialist airbag containers, advise on storage and segregation, and arrange collection using our own ADR fleet and trained drivers.

Modules are then processed through authorised recycling and disposal routes, where the pyrotechnic charge is dealt with under controlled conditions and the remaining metals, plastics and textiles are recovered and recycled wherever possible.

How do you recycle airbags?

We collect airbags from manufacturers, distributors, dealerships, garages and vehicle dismantlers before processing them through authorised recycling and disposal routes. Wherever possible, materials are recovered and recycled whilst maintaining full compliance and traceability.

Why do airbags require specialist disposal?

Airbags require specialist disposal because they contain pyrotechnic components that can pose safety risks if handled incorrectly. Due to their potentially hazardous nature, airbags must be collected, transported, handled and processed by trained specialists to ensure they are disposed of safely and in accordance with environmental regulations.

Can undeployed airbags be transported?

Yes, but undeployed modules are dangerous goods and must be packed in specialist containers and moved under ADR by trained drivers. We supply the containers and carry out the transport on our own fleet.

How should airbags be stored before collection?

Store modules in the specialist containers provided, in a dry area away from heat sources and combustible materials, with connectors protected. Keep undeployed and deployed units separate so they can be routed correctly.

Do you handle airbag recall programmes?

Yes. We work with vehicle manufacturers and their supply chains on recall programmes, providing containers, scheduled collections, destruction and the documentation needed to evidence it.

We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
