Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling

Electric vehicle batteries are one of the most complex waste streams on the road today. They're heavy, they hold residual charge and they have tightly controlled transport restrictions, which makes end-of-life handling something you really don't want to get wrong. At Vantage, we provide compliant electric vehicle battery recycling for manufacturers, dealerships, dismantlers and fleet operators, managing everything from collection through to final treatment.

Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling

Recycling EV batteries safely

An electric car battery holds significant energy long after the vehicle itself has reached the end of its life. It also holds valuable materials, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper and aluminium, all of which can be recovered through the right recycling route.

We work with vehicle manufacturers, dealerships, garages, dismantlers and fleet operators across the UK to manage EV battery waste safely. Whether you're dealing with a single damaged pack or an ongoing programme of end-of-life batteries, we'll help you find the right solution. No faff. No compliance headaches.

Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling

How it works

Tell us what you've got and we'll assess the condition of the battery before recommending a collection and recycling route. Damaged, defective and recalled packs are risk assessed individually and, where required, transported in UN-approved containers.

Once collected, batteries are transported to our Approved Battery Treatment Operation (ABTO), where packs are discharged, dismantled and processed so materials can be recovered and returned to the supply chain.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance you can trust

Electric vehicle batteries are classified as dangerous goods, which means transport, storage and treatment all carry strict requirements. Our team manages the risk assessments, ADR paperwork and logistics on your behalf, so batteries are handled correctly from the moment they leave your site. You'll know exactly where your waste has gone, and you'll have the records to prove it.

Why Choose Vantage?

EV batteries need specialist knowledge, specialist handling and specialist people. Our team includes IMI Level 4 qualified technicians and experienced battery specialists who work with high voltage packs every day, supported by our own ADR fleet and approved battery treatment capabilities.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) trusted by leading vehicle manufacturers for more than 20 years, there's a good chance we've handled your battery type before.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Can electric car batteries be recycled?
Yes. Electric vehicle batteries can be recycled to recover valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper and aluminium. Recycling these batteries supports your business's sustainability goals and helps reduce the environmental impact of battery production.
What happens to an EV battery at the end of its life?
End-of-life packs are assessed, safely discharged, dismantled and then shredded at an authorised treatment facility. During the shredding process, the modules and cells are separated, producing a powder mixture known as black mass. Materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, aluminium and steel are then recovered from the black mass following a series of chemical and metallurgical processes, before being returned to the supply chain wherever possible.
How are damaged EV batteries transported?
Damaged, defective or recalled packs require individual risk assessment and specialist transport arrangements. Depending on the condition of the battery, we can supply UN-approved containers and move it using our own ADR fleet and trained drivers. We have a range of container sizes available for the safe transportation of critically damaged batteries.
Are electric car batteries classed as hazardous waste?
Yes. Lithium-ion vehicle batteries are treated as hazardous waste and as dangerous goods in transport, which means storage, movement and treatment all carry specific legal requirements. Our team manages those requirements on your behalf.
Do you collect EV batteries from dealerships and garages?
Yes. We collect from vehicle manufacturers, dealerships, garages, dismantlers, fleet operators and logistics providers across the UK, on both one-off and scheduled collections.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
