Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Recycling

Nickel-metal hydride sits quietly between the chemistries that get all the attention. It replaced nickel-cadmium in most rechargeable applications, and it still powers hybrid vehicles, cordless phones, medical equipment and a great many rechargeable AA cells. At Vantage, we make nickel-metal hydride battery recycling straightforward, collecting, transporting and recycling NiMH through compliant routes.

Nickel-Metal Hydride

Recycling NiMH batteries the right way

NiMH is a more benign chemistry than nickel-cadmium, with no cadmium content, but it's still a waste battery and needs separate collection. It's also worth recovering, because the cells contain a useful quantity of nickel along with rare earth elements.

We collect and recycle nickel-metal hydride batteries from hybrid vehicle packs, cordless phones and consumer electronics, medical and test equipment, older power tools and rechargeable household cells. We work with manufacturers, retailers, garages, healthcare providers, offices and waste operators.

Whether you've got a collection box or a hybrid battery pack to move, we'll help find the right route.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us what you've got and roughly what volumes, and we'll recommend suitable containers, segregation and collection frequency. Hybrid vehicle packs are assessed separately, as they're high voltage and need specialist handling and transport.

Once collected, batteries are transported through approved channels to authorised treatment facilities, where cells are broken down so nickel, steel and rare earth elements can be recovered and returned to the supply chain.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance, sorted

Waste batteries carry duty of care and separate collection obligations regardless of chemistry, and hybrid vehicle packs bring high voltage and transport requirements with them as well. Our team manages the collection, paperwork and recycling process on your behalf, so your waste is handled correctly and you have the records to support it.

Why Choose Vantage?

NiMH turns up in two very different places, in mixed portable battery collections and in hybrid vehicle packs weighing tens of kilograms. We handle both, with IMI Level 4 qualified technicians for high voltage work and a fleet that scales from vans to HGVs.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO), we're trusted to handle complex battery waste streams compliantly, helping businesses reduce risk while recovering valuable materials wherever possible.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Can nickel-metal hydride batteries be recycled?
Yes. NiMH cells are broken down at authorised treatment facilities so that nickel, steel and rare earth elements can be recovered and returned to the supply chain rather than sent to landfill.
Are NiMH batteries hazardous waste?
NiMH batteries contain no cadmium and are less hazardous than nickel-cadmium, but they remain waste batteries subject to separate collection and duty of care requirements, and they should not be placed in general waste.
Where are nickel-metal hydride batteries used?
NiMH is used in hybrid vehicle battery packs, rechargeable AA and AAA cells, cordless phones, consumer electronics, medical and test equipment, and some older cordless power tools.

Yes. Hybrid packs are high voltage and require assessment, isolation and specialist transport before treatment. Our IMI Level 4 qualified technicians handle high voltage packs and we move them using our own ADR fleet.
How should NiMH batteries be stored before collection?
Store them in a dry, cool place away from combustible materials, with terminals protected to prevent short circuits. Keep them separate from lithium and nickel-cadmium cells so each chemistry can be routed correctly.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
