Alkaline Battery
Recycling

Alkaline batteries are the ones that pile up fastest. AA and AAA cells from keyboards, remotes, torches, test equipment and display stock accumulate across every site, and once the box is full somebody has to deal with it. At Vantage, we make alkaline battery recycling simple, supplying the containers, collecting on a schedule that suits you and recycling everything through approved routes

Alkaline Battery Recycling

Recycling alkaline batteries the right way

Alkaline cells are the most common battery in circulation and among the easiest to recycle, but they still shouldn't go to landfill. They contain steel, zinc and manganese that can be recovered and put back into new products rather than thrown away.

We collect and recycle alkaline batteries for offices, retailers, manufacturers, distributors, schools, leisure operators, local authorities and waste companies. That covers AA, AAA, C, D, 9V and other alkaline formats, whether they're loose in a collection box or returned as stock.

Whether you've got one container to empty or multiple sites to service, we'll help find the right route.

Alkaline Battery Recycling

How it works

Tell us roughly what volumes you generate and across how many sites, and we'll recommend suitable containers and a collection frequency that keeps things tidy without paying for half-empty collections.

Once collected, batteries are transported through approved channels and processed at authorised recycling facilities, where they are sorted and broken down so steel, zinc and manganese can be recovered and returned to the supply chain.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance you can trust

Businesses that supply, distribute or collect portable batteries have obligations under the batteries regulations, and waste batteries carry duty of care requirements like any other waste stream. Our team manages the collection, paperwork and recycling process on your behalf, so you have the records to support your reporting.

No confusing regulations. No chasing paperwork. No wondering where your waste ended up.

Why Choose Vantage?

Alkaline is rarely the only battery on a site, and that's where most providers come unstuck. Mixed collection boxes almost always contain lithium and rechargeable cells too, which need identifying and separating rather than sending everything down the same route.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) with our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 collection points, we can handle mixed portable battery waste correctly and keep your collections simple

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can alkaline batteries be recycled?
Yes. Alkaline batteries are recyclable and shouldn't be sent to landfill. They are sorted and broken down at authorised recycling facilities so that steel, zinc and manganese can be recovered and used in new products.
Are alkaline batteries hazardous waste?
Modern alkaline batteries are no longer classified as hazardous waste in the way older mercury-containing cells were, but they are still waste batteries and must be collected separately and recycled through approved routes rather than placed in general waste.
Can alkaline batteries go in the general waste bin?
No. Waste batteries must be collected separately for recycling. There's also a practical reason: mixed battery boxes almost always contain lithium cells, and those pose a serious fire risk if they're crushed in a waste vehicle or transfer station.
What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Do you provide alkaline battery collection containers?
Yes. We supply battery storage containers sized to your volumes and can set up scheduled or on-demand collections across single or multiple sites.
What happens if other battery types end up in the box?
That's normal, and we plan for it. Mixed collections are sorted by chemistry at authorised facilities, and our team can advise on segregation and terminal taping to reduce fire risk while batteries are stored on site.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
