Industrial Lithium Battery Recycling

Lithium has taken over industrial power. Forklifts, automated guided vehicles, access platforms, cleaning machines and plant equipment increasingly run on lithium packs rather than lead acid, and the disposal route is completely different. At Vantage, we provide compliant industrial lithium battery recycling, handling everything from collection and ADR transport through to final treatment.

Industrial Lithium Battery Recycling

Industrial lithium packs are large, high voltage and built around a battery management system, which means condition matters as much as chemistry. A pack that has been dropped, deep discharged or flagged by its BMS needs assessing before it goes anywhere.

Our service covers lithium batteries from forklift trucks and materials handling equipment, AGVs and warehouse robotics, access platforms and scissor lifts, industrial cleaning machines, plant and telecoms back-up systems. We work with manufacturers, dealers, hire companies, warehouse operators, facilities teams and waste operators.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us the pack type, voltage and condition and we'll recommend the appropriate isolation, packaging and transport arrangements, along with any lifting you'll need on site. Damaged and defective packs are risk-assessed individually and can be moved in UN-approved containers where required.

Once collected, packs are transported through approved channels to authorised treatment facilities, where they are discharged, dismantled to module or cell level and processed so lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper and aluminium can be recovered and returned to the supply chain.

Full documentation and complete traceability come as standard.

Compliance

Compliance you can trust

Industrial lithium batteries are hazardous waste and class 9 dangerous goods in transport, so packaging, labelling, documentation and driver requirements all apply. Our team manages the risk assessments, consignment paperwork and logistics on your behalf, so packs leave the site correctly and you have a clear audit trail through to final treatment.

Why Choose Vantage?

Industrial lithium is a stream where getting it wrong is expensive and occasionally dangerous. Our team includes IMI Level 4 qualified technicians and experienced battery specialists, supported by our own ADR fleet ranging from vans to HGVs and a permitted treatment facility.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO), we're trusted to handle complex battery waste streams compliantly, helping businesses reduce risk while ensuring valuable materials are recovered wherever possible.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
What counts as an industrial lithium battery?
An industrial lithium battery is any lithium battery designed for industrial or professional use rather than a consumer product. That includes forklift and materials handling packs, AGV and robotics batteries, access platform batteries, industrial cleaning machine packs and telecoms or plant back-up systems.
Can lithium forklift batteries be recycled?
Yes. Lithium forklift packs are discharged and dismantled at an authorised treatment facility so that lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper and aluminium can be recovered and returned to the supply chain.
How should industrial lithium batteries be stored before collection?
Store packs in a dry, cool area away from combustible materials, ideally at a partial state of charge, with terminals protected and connectors capped. Damaged, swollen or BMS-flagged packs should be isolated and reported to us so we can arrange suitable containment.
Are industrial lithium batteries classed as hazardous waste?
Yes. They are treated as hazardous waste and as class 9 dangerous goods in transport, which means storage, movement and treatment all carry specific legal requirements and consignment documentation.
Can you collect damaged or defective lithium packs?
Yes. Damaged, defective or recalled packs require individual risk assessment and specialist transport procedures. Our team can advise on the safest collection method based on the battery's condition and regulatory requirements.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
