Power Tool Battery Recycling

Tool packs take a beating. They get dropped, left in vans over winter, charged on site and run flat repeatedly, which means the ones coming out of service are rarely in pristine condition. At Vantage, we provide compliant power tool battery recycling for trade, hire and retail operations, collecting and recycling li-ion, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride packs through approved routes.

Tool Power Packs

Recycling tool packs safely

Power tool batteries cover three chemistries in practice. Most current packs are lithium-ion, older stock is often nickel-cadmium, and nickel-metal hydride sits somewhere in between. Each needs a different treatment route, and lithium packs that have been damaged in service need handling more carefully again.

We collect and recycle tool packs for tool hire fleets, builders merchants, retailers, manufacturers, service centres, construction firms and facilities teams. That includes end-of-life packs, warranty returns, damaged units and discontinued stock.

Whether it's a bin at a service counter or a fleet refresh, we'll help find the right route.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us what chemistries and volumes you're dealing with and we'll recommend suitable containers, including UN-approved packaging for damaged or defective lithium packs, along with advice on segregation and terminal protection.

Once collected, packs are transported through approved channels using our own ADR fleet and processed at authorised recycling facilities, where cells are discharged and broken down so lithium, cobalt, nickel, cadmium and steel can be recovered.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance you can trust

Lithium tool packs are class 9 dangerous goods in transport, and nickel-cadmium packs are hazardous waste, so a mixed collection often carries both sets of obligations. Our team manages classification, packaging, documentation and logistics on your behalf, so everything leaves site correctly and you have a clear audit trail.

Why Choose Vantage?

Tool packs arrive mixed, damaged and unlabelled more often than not, which is exactly the kind of waste stream we're set up for. Our team identifies and segregates chemistries rather than sending everything down one route, and handles damaged lithium packs as a matter of routine.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) with our own ADR fleet and permitted treatment facility, we can manage tool battery waste from collection through to final recycling.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can power tool batteries be recycled?
Yes. Lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride tool packs are all recyclable. Cells are discharged and broken down at authorised facilities so that lithium, cobalt, nickel, cadmium and steel can be recovered.
How should power tool batteries be stored before collection?
Keep packs in a dry, cool place away from combustible materials, with terminals and contacts protected to prevent short circuits. Damaged, swollen or heat-affected lithium packs should be isolated immediately and reported to us.
Can you collect damaged tool batteries?
Yes. Damaged, defective and recalled packs require specialist handling and transport. We can supply UN-approved containers and advise on the safest way to isolate and store them until collection.
What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Do you collect from tool hire and service centres?
Yes. We collect from tool hire fleets, builders merchants, retailers, manufacturers, service centres and construction firms across the UK, on both one-off and scheduled collections.
What happens to old nickel-cadmium tool packs?
Older NiCd packs are hazardous waste due to their cadmium content and are routed to specialist facilities where cadmium is recovered under controlled conditions and nickel and steel are returned to the supply chain.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
