Lithium Battery  Recycling

Lithium batteries are undeniably one of the main challenges when it comes to battery recycling. They're in almost everything, they hold a lot of energy in a small package, and if they're crushed, punctured or short circuited they can catch fire. At Vantage, we provide compliant lithium battery disposal and recycling, taking care of containers, collection, ADR transport and treatment so you don't have to think about any of it.

Lithium Battery Recycling

Recycling and disposing of lithium batteries safely

Lithium covers two broad groups. Primary lithium cells are single use and turn up in smoke detectors, meters, medical devices, cameras and industrial sensors. Rechargeable lithium-ion packs power everything from laptops and power tools to e-bikes and vapes. Both need separating from general waste and handling with care.

We collect and recycle lithium batteries for manufacturers, retailers, distributors, offices, local authorities and waste operators across the UK, including damaged, defective and recalled stock that needs a more careful route than a standard collection.

Whether you've got a collection box or a warehouse clearance, we'll help find the right solution. No faff. No compliance headaches.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us what you've got and what condition it's in. We'll recommend suitable containers, including UN-approved packaging where the chemistry or condition calls for it, and advise on terminal taping and segregation before collection.

Once collected, batteries are transported through approved channels using our own ADR fleet and processed at authorised recycling facilities, where cells are discharged and broken down so lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper can be recovered.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance you can trust

Lithium batteries are class 9 dangerous goods in transport, and damaged or defective cells carry additional packaging requirements on top of that. Our team manages the classification, paperwork and logistics on your behalf, so consignments leave the site correctly and you have the records to support your duty of care.

Why Choose Vantage?

Lithium is where experience shows. Our team includes IMI Level 4 qualified technicians and experienced battery specialists who deal with damaged and defective cells routinely, backed by our own ADR fleet and permitted treatment facility.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO), we're trusted to handle complex battery waste streams compliantly, helping businesses reduce risk while recovering valuable materials wherever possible.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
How do you dispose of lithium batteries?
Lithium batteries must be collected separately and recycled through an approved route rather than placed in general waste or standard recycling. Terminals should be taped, cells stored away from combustible materials, and collection arranged through a specialist provider who can transport them under ADR.
Why can't lithium batteries go in general waste?
Lithium batteries can pose significant fire and safety risks if damaged or incorrectly disposed of. They also contain valuable materials that can be recovered through recycling. Specialist collection and recycling helps protect people, property and the environment.
Can lithium batteries be recycled?
Yes. Lithium cells are discharged and broken down at authorised facilities so that lithium, cobalt, nickel and copper can be recovered and returned to the supply chain, reducing demand for newly mined material.
How should lithium batteries be stored before collection?
Keep them in a dry, cool place away from combustible materials, tape or cap the terminals to prevent short circuits, and avoid stacking loose cells in a way that lets them contact each other. Swollen or damaged cells should be isolated immediately.
Can damaged lithium batteries be transported?
Yes, but damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries require specialist handling and transportation procedures. Our team can advise on the safest collection and disposal method based on the battery's condition and regulatory requirements.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
