Mobility Scooter Battery Recycling

Mobility scooter batteries are heavier and higher capacity than most people expect, and the chemistry varies from one model to the next. Sealed lead acid is still common, but lithium packs are now widespread, and the two need completely different handling. At Vantage, we make mobility scooter battery recycling straightforward, collecting, transporting and recycling both types through compliant routes.

Mobility Scooter Battery Recycling

Recycling mobility scooter batteries safely

A mobility scooter battery isn't a portable battery. Sealed lead acid units are heavy and contain corrosive electrolyte, while lithium packs carry fire risk if they're damaged, swollen or stored incorrectly. Neither belongs in a skip or a general waste bin.

We work with mobility retailers, dealers, service and repair providers, hire companies, care providers, community equipment services and local authorities to manage battery waste safely. That covers batteries removed during servicing, batteries from scrapped and returned scooters, and warranty or recall stock.

Whether you've got a handful from a workshop or a stockroom to clear, we'll help find the right route.

Our Process

How it works

Tell us what chemistries you're dealing with and roughly what volumes, and we'll recommend suitable containers, segregation and collection frequency. Lead acid and lithium need keeping apart, and we can supply battery storage units and UN-approved containers where required.

Once collected, batteries are transported through approved channels to authorised treatment facilities. Lead, plastic and acid are recovered from sealed lead acid units, while lithium packs are discharged and processed so lithium, nickel and cobalt can be recovered.

You'll receive full documentation and complete traceability throughout the process.

Compliance

Compliance, sorted

Both chemistries are classed as hazardous waste, and lithium packs are dangerous goods in transport, which brings packaging, labelling and consignment requirements with them. Our team manages the paperwork, transport and recycling process on your behalf, so batteries are handled in line with current regulations and you have a clear audit trail.

Why Choose Vantage?

We've spent more than 20 years handling waste streams that others find awkward, and mixed chemistry battery waste is a good example. The value is in identifying and segregating correctly rather than treating everything the same.

As an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) with our own ADR fleet and permitted treatment facility, we can manage mobility scooter battery waste from collection through to final recycling.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO)?
An Approved Battery Treatment Operator (ABTO) is a UK-authorised facility that safely treats and recycles waste batteries in line with environmental regulations. Sending waste batteries to an ABTO ensures legal compliance, safe recycling and environmental protection. UK regulations require producers and businesses to route used portable, industrial and automotive batteries through certified operators, helping maximise material recovery while minimising environmental impact.
Can mobility scooter batteries be recycled?
Yes. Both sealed lead acid and lithium mobility scooter batteries are recyclable. Lead, plastic and acid are recovered from lead acid units, while lithium packs are processed to recover lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper.
What type of battery does a mobility scooter use?
Most older and mid-range scooters use sealed lead acid batteries, typically AGM or gel. Newer and lightweight models increasingly use lithium-ion packs. The two require different storage, transport and treatment, so they need segregating before collection.
How should mobility scooter batteries be stored before collection?
Store batteries upright in a dry, cool place away from combustible materials, with terminals protected to prevent short circuits, and keep lead acid and lithium separate. Swollen or damaged lithium packs should be isolated and reported to us so we can arrange suitable containment.
Can you collect swollen or damaged lithium packs?
Yes. Damaged, swollen, defective and recalled lithium batteries require individual risk assessment and specialist handling. We can supply UN-approved containers and advise on the safest way to isolate and store them until collection.
Do you collect from mobility retailers and repair workshops?
Yes. We collect from mobility retailers, dealers, service and repair providers, hire companies, care providers and local authorities across the UK, on both one-off and scheduled collections.
Do you offer nationwide waste collection services?
Yes, we operate our own fleet collecting from over 2,500 customer collection points throughout the UK. Speak to us about your requirements for further information tailored to your business.
What containers do you provide for waste collections?
We provide a wide range of containers, including wheelie bins, drums, IBCs, stillages, pallet boxes, battery storage units, specialist airbag containers and UN-approved containers for critically damaged EV batteries. We can also provide vermiculite for safe battery storage. Our team will recommend the most suitable option based on your waste stream, storage requirements, operational needs and collection schedule.
